Upper School Unveils New Schedule for 2020-21 School Year

On Tuesday, August 25th, Upper School director Chris Singler shared adjustments to the upper school schedule for both the all-virtual model beginning on September 8th and the hybrid model planned to begin on September 29th.

As Michael Gary stated in yesterday’s altered reopening plan, students will only attend school twice a week in the hybrid model. Half of students planning to return to school on September 29th will attend school on Mondays and Tuesdays (“GOLD” days), the other half on Thursdays and Fridays (“BROWN” days). Virtual Wednesdays are for office hours, Meeting for Worship, clubs, assemblies, and asynchronous work.

The schedule allots four sixty-five minute class periods during the school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, as well as a fifty-five minute community time period in the morning and a forty-minute lunch and club block. Fifteen minutes of passing time remain between each period.

Teachers will provide office hours from 9:35-10:20 on Monday and Friday mornings, 3:15-3:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 2:05-3:10 on Wednesdays.

Tuesday and Thursday morning community time blocks will be used for advisory, and Meeting for Worship will be held on Wednesdays.

The new schedule still allows space for eight subjects, but classes will now meet only twice a week. Individualized class schedules will be emailed to students between August 26th and 27th.

Chris Singler also sent out a modified version of this schedule that will be used for the first week of school, since school is closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 7th. On Thursday, September 9th and Friday, September 10th, all seniors will participate in all-day college workshops.

Due to Yom Kippur on Monday, September 28th, the week of September 29th will also have a modified schedule with “GOLD” students coming to school on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Chris Singler’s email also included information about New Student Orientation and supply pick-up times. Orientation for all ninth graders and new tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students will occur in-person on Monday, August 31st. Students can come collect supplies at the school building (textbooks, English books, art supplies, and yearbooks) on 8/31 from 3:30-5:30 PM, 9/1 from 7:30-8:30 AM, 9/2 from 12:30-2:30 PM, or 9/3 from 4:00-6:00 PM. Families should indicate which day they wish to pick up supplies through a form linked in Chris’s email.

Families are also encouraged to attend a Zoom with Chris Singler on Thursday, August 27th at 6:00 PM to discuss the new changes to the schedule.
