It Ends With Us: A Review
Spoiler Alert: This article contains significant spoiler alerts for the plot of It Ends With Us. We recommend you read the book before you read this article!
It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover is a beautifully written love story between two imperfect characters. The protagonist, Lily Bloom, struggles with her conflicted feelings after she falls for Ryle, the mysterious man she meets one night on his apartment rooftop. At first sight, the two seem destined for love, instantly clicking with their first interaction. They discuss their “naked truths,” confessions spoken directly from their hearts, and win over the reader in the process. Of course, their love story isn’t without drama. Atlas, Lily’s childhood boyfriend, comes back into her life, complicating things between her and Ryle.
This story becomes more and more heartfelt especially after learning that Colleen wrote this story based on the struggles her parents faced with one another. This New York Times Bestseller twists your heart and mind in circles, yet you’ll still find yourself smiling because of the undeniable love between Lily and her chosen lover throughout the novel. Colleen Hoover is so raw and honest in how she describes Lily that you can’t help but be emotionally impacted by this book. When Lily’s trust is shattered, it’s almost as if the reader is experiencing it alongside her.
Despite how much she resists, Lily falls in love with Ryle before even acknowledging this herself. They quickly rush into a relationship, and it seems that nothing could tear them apart. After running into Atlas, a figure from her past, Lily becomes conflicted. She met Atlas as a young teenager while they were both struggling for their own reasons and in need of an escape. Though their relationship was not sustainable, neither are able to forget their love for each other. He moves away, she slowly moves on, they both put these memories in their past. An uncomfortable encounter between Lily, Ryle, and Atlas causes her two lives to intertwine causing her to realize that her past must stay in the past and that her future is before her -Ryle is her true love. After months of a seemingly blissful relationship, Lily thinks Ryle is her endgame. That is – until he loses his temper a few too many times. Lily finally realizes why her mother couldn’t leave her father when she was a child.
Who should read It Ends With Us? We think this book should be read by those who not only like romance novels but are prepared to dive into more complex and painful relationships. It certainly isn’t your typical love story. Overall, It Ends With Us is a great read, and is also very popular at the moment. Just a random book we happened to hear about on social media turned out to be one of the most powerful books we have ever read in this genre of writing.
