The musical Pippin takes center stage at Friends Select School this year, set to run from November 16th to 18th, and is directed by professional theater artist Julianna Babb, produced by FSS Upper School Drama and English teacher Stephanie Kyung Sun Walters, and stars a cast of Friends Select students.
In Pippin, the main character, Pippin, played by Olukayode Ekundare ‘25, embarks on a quest to find his purpose, encountering a colorful cast of characters along the way, including the cunning Leading Player, played by Atia Osborne ‘24, who guides him through a series of adventures. With these adventures, Pippin has to make hard decisions from war and politics to love and his family.
Julianna and Stephanie expressed excitement for this production. “I am excited to work with the same actors and staff from last year while also working with a new staff from middle school and new students,” Julianna says. She previously worked on Mamma Mia during the fall of 2022 so she hopes to rekindle the energy and excitement from that musical and put it into Pippin.
One thing Julianna and Stephanie want to accomplish with this musical is the connection between the characters and the audience: “The audience and actors can connect this musical to their school and personal life…both [audience members and actors] have to make hard decisions that can make or break their life,” Stephanie explained.
