The Friends Select Boys Varsity Soccer Team is excited to continue and have a strong finish to the 24-25 season.
The team had an impressive preseason, according to Soccer Team Captain Gavin Ewing ‘25. The Varsity Boys Soccer Team won all of their preseason soccer games and spent practice time focusing on their weak spots. “Right now, the goals for the season are to put up as many goals as possible,” said Gavin. “From what I have seen in preseason, scoring goals is our weak spot so in practice we have been working on finding the corners instead of shooting right at the goalie.”
Though the boys’ soccer team has experienced some disconnect throughout the years they are working on staying organized and focusing on working and playing as a team. Miles Lesser ‘26 takes on the responsibility of goalie, a difficult job that takes a lot of effort mentally and physically. Miles is able to not only stay attentive to the opposing team but also to his own. “We are really working hard to work as a team, I try to keep the defense organized as I can see the whole field,” said Miles.
Friends Select’s soccer team works on staying strong under pressure and keeping their heads up during hard times. “The team is getting much better at handling pressure in game situations,” said Barry Lynch, Boys Soccer Team coach. “In practice we are doing a lot of ball work in smaller spaces. This allows the athletes to learn how to make quick decisions when they have the ball.” Barry believes that staying positive is the key to motivating players, no matter their mistakes.
The team is progressing more and more every year and shoots to win a trophy. “The Friends League is a tough league to win, as it is competitive and has a lot of strong teams,” said Barry “However, that does not change our mindset. Every season we approach all the games with the mindset that we can win. Our aim is to improve as individuals and as a team throughout the season. This is one of the strongest teams we have had and I believe we can compete with everyone in the league.”
Coach Barry has nothing but high hopes for his players. “Since I have been coaching, the last two or three years have been our best seasons. We have been more competitive in the league,” said Barry.
