The Soft/Cover exhibit at the Fabric Workshop and Museum made me want my money back even though I didn’t spend a dime.
For the last three months, I’ve been wanting to make it to the Fabric Workshop and Museum. From what I heard from a short video on TikTok, it is breathtakingly beautiful. The museum is about a block from the convention center. It is also completely free. To be fair, the review I saw was about a different exhibit called the Rose Garden. Still, I expected the next exhibit to be on the same level.
The Soft/Cover exhibit opened on October 9th, 2024. The exhibit was inspired by the early days of the Museum. I went there expecting the same beauty I saw online. I was expecting the exhibit to be not just art but a fully submersive experience. I did not get that. I think the pieces had so much potential. From the plaques I saw, the art had such a powerful story about the modern human experience, but the way they were set up took all that power away. It’s hard to appreciate the work when the setup left much to be desired. I walked into the museum and all the pieces were sprawled around in what seemed like an empty warehouse. Not all of the pieces had plaques with their names, but instead, there was a paper I was supposed to use to figure out which piece was which. I was let down. I wanted to be amazed, but that just did not happen.
The exhibit could have so much more impact if the execution were simply better. I had a craving for an art exhibit that I had never seen before but could not get satisfaction and instead was left staring.
