Wednesday, September 25th was election day for the new ninth graders of FSS. The kids of our grade made speeches, performed them for the freshman class, and were voted into office a few weeks ago. I interviewed two 9th-grade class officers and two 9th-grade student government representatives to take a look into the election and thought process of these new members. So, let’s get to know some of the class of 2028 representatives!
Calliope Crawford-Blaine ‘28, a new Class Officer, stated that she was looking forward to “planning dances, fundraisers, and designing merch” for the freshman class. She also said she was excited about writing and performing her speech during the election. In the past, Calliope volunteered at horse shows and ran her camp office and Phone-A-Thon at summer camp.
As for Serena Krouk ‘28, another new Class Officer, she thought “it was really important that our grade had some awesome spirit,” and also wanted to demonstrate her leadership skills. She enjoyed making posters during the election process and liked seeing her peers’ ideas during speeches as well. She looked forward to submitting the ninth grade petitions for building leave and phone access, and strives to keep the ninth grade “thriving.” In eighth grade, Serena was a leader of the spirit committee and loved sharing her ideas with the community, which adds to her experience for the position.
Susanna (Susie) Harries ‘28 is a new Student Government Representative. She hopes to build her leadership and speaking skills in her new role. “I also thought there are some things that could be changed about the school,” said Susie. Along with other student reps, she feels like there should be more period products in the bathrooms, and that there should be less homework for students. She wants people to know that they should be able to come to her with questions, concerns, or ideas for the school.
Last but not least, Fayola (Fay) Kim ‘28 is another new Student Government Representative. Fay wants to make a “real impact” on our grade in her new position. She is striving to make freshman ideas heard in student government: she feels that freshmen can bring a new perspective to the table; especially having been at FSS since Pre-K, she has seen many changes occur at the school such as the theater renovation and the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) building being opened for upper schoolers. She feels that she can be beneficial to the school and looks forward to doing the best she can in her role.
All in all, the student representatives and class officers are glad to be in their positions and look forward to improving the 9th grade!
