Saad Halal in University City isn’t just a restaurant; it’s been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. Since I was six, I’ve come here with my family, sharing spontaneous dinners in the cozy booth seating that always feels welcoming and familiar. The atmosphere is calm and laid-back, with warm aromas of grilled meat and spices drifting through the air, making me hungrier with each whiff. Soft Lebanese music blends with the friendly chatter of families and the lively sounds from the kitchen, creating a vibrant yet comforting setting. Beyond my personal connection, Saad Halal is a cornerstone of West Philly’s Muslim community, nestled in the heart of it all, right across from a mosque. It was one of the first Zabiha halal restaurants here—a place where the meat is prepared according to specific Islamic guidelines–making it especially meaningful for Muslim families in the area.
While eating, I had the chance to speak with Saad Al Rayes, the owner of Saad Halal, and was truly fascinated by his story. When Zabiha’s halal options were limited in Philadelphia, he took it upon himself to make sure the Muslim community had access to authentic halal food by personally slaughtering the animals. This dedication speaks to his commitment to serving the community with genuine care. For over 36 years, he has been delivering fresh and consistent flavors.
“By the grace of Allah, I’ve been able to keep things as they’ve always been,” Saad said.
Their Chicken Maroosh is a standout menu item, a sandwich that is a unique take on traditional shawarma. Saad mentioned how he adapted it over the years, blending the shawarma with the hoagie roll, making it a true Philly creation. The taste is comforting and unique, and every bite delivers a mix of crispy bread, tender chicken, and a hint of pickle and tomato, adding a refreshing contrast. Even my friend Bryant Peacock ’25, who isn’t usually into pickles and tomatoes, found it perfectly balanced in this sandwich.
I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, and every visit feels nostalgic yet fresh. Saad Halal is a must-visit for anyone seeking a warm meal and a genuine atmosphere.
