From November 16th to December 15th, 2024, FSS student artwork from all three divisions will be displayed in Kids Care 31, at the Helen Millard Children’s Gallery at the Woodmere Art Museum.
There is student art from third grade, eighth grade, Creating with Technology I, and volunteers from Metalsmithing I and Advanced Metalsmithing. Students in the Creating with Technology I class started by creating art from the prompt “My Favorite Place,” which was interpreted differently by every student. “Students chose to create fantastical composites in Photoshop, laser engrave their photographs on wood, and construct layered cut paper art from their digital illustrations using a die-cutting machine,” said Zoë Blatt, Upper School Art Teacher.
Tr. Dan Deslaurier’s third grade class was very excited about the project. “You might guess that our third graders were pretty excited to share their visions! And, if you were going to share a view of your favorite place with someone, what better medium than a postcard? Each student artist… produced a beautiful, vibrant watercolor postcard,” said Tr. Dan.
In addition, Tr. Dan praised Kids Care as a great opportunity for the students to create art that gets to be on display for others to see. “It takes their creativity to a whole new level! I am so proud of our student artists’ hard work in sharing their art with a larger community in a city institution and, more so, donating their creations as a gift,” said Tr Dan.
At the end of the exhibit, each piece of art will be carefully wrapped and delivered with a delicious meal to people battling life-threatening illnesses. The Kids Care program is a collaboration between the Woodmere Museum and MANNA (Metropolitan Area Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance), a program that frequently takes in FSS student volunteers.
The exhibit is already available for public view, and the closing reception is on Saturday, December 14th, from 1 to 3 p.m. According to the museum, the reception will have a festive performance at 2 p.m., refreshments for everyone, and artmaking throughout the evening.
