One of the best places near FSS to study is The Free Library of Philadelphia. The heart of the Free Library of Philadelphia system, which has more than 50 locations throughout the city, is the library alongside Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Open from 9:00 am-8:00 pm on weekdays and 9:00 am-5:00 pm on weekends, excluding Sunday, the library creates an atmosphere of productivity accessible to students and anyone who needs a quiet space to work. Kate Gunther ‘25, a frequent visitor of the Free Library of Philadelphia, feels that the setting increases her productivity and drive. She says, “Although there are always people in the Free Library, it’s quiet and almost sacred. Having an environment that is open and beautiful and where everyone is productive keeps me motivated when I’m working.”
Cafe Cret is a popular cafe located directly next to Friends Select. Although small, it has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and an extensive menu consisting of coffee, smoothies, teas, and breakfast and lunch foods. Students capitalize on the opportunity to study outside, improving focus while working. According to The University of Arizona, the benefits of studying outside include increasing natural energy, boosting problem-solving skills, reducing stress, improving mood, and more. Maddie Cohen ‘25 says, “I have gone to Cafe Cret in the past years to study for my finals and found that the calm environment has been very helpful for me.” She goes on to say, “They offer indoor and outdoor seating, which is really nice and creates a lot of variety!”
The Comcast Center, located in Center City, has multiple features that create a unique environment. From the sensory-friendly room, the universal sphere, the 27 million pixel LED video wall, or the dining options with plenty of seating, the establishment has plenty to do for all kinds of people. Being a short walk from school, it is accessible to Friends Select students. Satisfying your hunger by snacking while working is always a better option than attempting to work on an empty stomach, according to Oxford Learning. This makes the Comcast Center a reliable place to work, as it is surrounded by food options.
The Starbucks near Friends Select has impacted not only students’ hunger but also productivity. Located only a couple minutes from school, the establishment has natural lighting, multiple tables, free wifi, and a selection of food and drinks. Jaiden Spilman ‘26 says, “Starbucks creates an environment of productivity and comfort.” She adds: “The seats facing each other invite people to collaborate on ideas and finish their work while eating their favorite food and drinks.”
