Even in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic, new Friends Select baseball coach David Semel is doing his best to keep some normalcy in the lives of his players. David seemingly has an impossible job, trying to coach a new team while still adhering to the social distancing guidelines.

The new season started out strong for the new head coach, with a roster composed of mostly upper-classmen, immediately bought into the practice routine David had implemented. While in the past, teams struggled with staying active in practices, coach David was able to keep the team energetic and focused.

However, on March 12th, Friends Select announced they were transitioning to online classes, and the spring sports season was indefinitely postponed. David was unphased and immediately went to work crafting a new routine to keep his team ready for the baseball season. Weekly team meetings were organized, and daily workouts and links to clips of baseball games were sent to players almost daily.

David has continued to work with the team when it wasn’t expected of him. When asked why, he said it was for the ‘bigger picture’. David doesn’t care about the results, instead, he wants to “give his team an outlet, where they can focus on something other than Corona and can talk to their friends and see each other. That’s the only thing that matters right now.”
