Wawa and Comcast, perhaps two of the most recognizable brands in Philadelphia. Between the gleaming monument to Philadelphia’s advancement and the humble shrine to Philadelphia’s grit stands Benjamin Perez. Mr. Perez has guarded the crosswalk spanning Arch Street for two years. His benevolence is apparent as commuters, students, and people from all walks of life return his cordial greetings. Many pass him by without a thought, but others stop to acknowledge him. Mr. Perez exchanges fist bumps with people carrying backpacks and briefcases, people wearing suits, and people wearing sweats. He works as a security guard with Allied Universal, America’s largest independent security provider, contracted by the Comcast Center. In his words, his job is simple: “I just stop people from getting hurt all day.” But this is not the only fulfilling aspect of Mr. Perez’s occupation. He has forged bonds with people he says he would “never even think about talking to.” Mr. Perez works tirelessly with the ambition of establishing his own business. No matter how harsh the weather or the indifferent masses who ignore his salutations and well-wishes, he continues with a smile and a steadfast positive attitude. Benjamin Perez’s constant benignity is a welcome reminder of the community that surrounds us, though we may not always see it.
