After a long, tiring day at school, a student logs in to play a game of Fortnite with the intention of unwinding after a long day, but ends up dealing with high-skilled, pro-level opponents, which forces the question: Is gaming still fun and enjoyable for casual players?
As the gaming world evolves, it has become increasingly focused on competitiveness. Thanks to the rapid pace of innovation in technology and software development, today’s games are becoming increasingly competitive, encouraging players to improve their skills and strive to be better. For instance, most modern games incorporate features such as ranking systems, matchmaking based on skill levels, and global rankings. Therefore it can be said that the evolution of esports over the last 20 years has also played a role in making the gaming community increasingly competitive. A research report from Frontiers in Psychology states, “Competitive online gaming… has rapidly grown.” While these changes have benefited some, they have also intensified competition, making it difficult for casual players to adapt.
Gaming has also led to the emergence of some negative impacts, including stress and anxiety. In contrast to traditional games that offer very little when players lose, in competitive games, it is common for gamers to feel bad after their losses. There is a chance that players will be demoted and lose their rank or progress which adds a certain burden to playing well in each match. This can cause frustration, fatigue, and even anxiety for individuals who simply play for leisure. According to a National Institutes of Health study, “The competitive nature of esports can lead to increased stress levels.” Games have stopped being fun and relaxing activities and have become another source of stress.
This increasing complexity has also led to a separation between competitive and casual gamers. Competitive gamers tend to be driven by the desire to win and advance in rankings. In general, competitive gamers spend a lot of time practicing and becoming skilled at playing the game. However, casual gamers often just play for entertainment or social reasons. As reported in a recent article from Science Direct, “Casual players… play for enjoyment and relaxation.” When a game is based solely on competition, it may be difficult to accommodate casual players. They may have trouble finding enjoyment in matches when facing skilled players or when performance matters more than enjoyment.
A number of games today exacerbate this issue by placing more emphasis on competition rather than on the casual nature of the game. Skill-based matchmaking, which is supposed to ensure equal conditions of play, can be ineffective at times and leave the casual player up against an opponent with a much higher skill level, especially when the skill assessment system fails. Many games place too much emphasis on statistics and performance, encouraging players to strive for success at the expense of entertainment. According to an Association for Computing Machinery study from 2025, “game systems often prioritize competitive performance,” which can have an inadvertent negative impact on casual players.
It is essential to note that competitive gaming is not completely harmful. For some gamers, competitiveness can be a strong motivator to play and even improve their game performance. Esports have provided a platform for individuals to pursue careers in gaming. Additionally, some game genres offer competitive modes that make playing more enjoyable. What makes competitive gaming an issue is balancing its user base. Too much competition will push away most casual gamers, which could hurt any game’s popularity.
As games continue to evolve, the gaming industry and players may need to reconsider the nature of gaming. Is it supposed to continue serving as an escape from reality and a source of entertainment, or should it shift towards competitiveness? Perhaps there is a balance between the two. Game designers must develop features that appeal not only to hardcore gamers but also to casual gamers. The future success of the gaming industry might depend on how they achieve this balance.
