Starbucks VS. Dunkin: Quality vs. Convenience
It’s a nice fall day, and I’m walking around the city and see two different coffee shops. I stare at both of them, trying to decide which one to go to. When I look into the first one, I see a bare interior and a crowd of people rushing. I walk into the next store, and there are a bunch of people sitting everywhere, refreshers being shaken, and coffee being brewed. The Barista smiles at me and asks if I want to order. When I get to drink, take the first sip, it’s heavenly. I realize I made the right decision.
Starbucks was founded in 1971 in Seattle, Washington. When it first opened, Starbucks only sold coffee beans, teas, and select spices, and didn’t sell its own beverages until 1984. Now, Starbucks carries its own merch, coffee beans, food, and beverages. There are currently 32,000 Starbucks locations across 80 countries, while Dunkin has over 14,000 stores in 40 countries.
When you compare the two stores side by side, Starbucks has better ambiance and more seating options. Mike Grams, the Starbucks chief operating officer, notes the intentional details of the store’s design, stating it’s about creating “comfortable seating where people want to come in. It’s not just the quick grab and go concept.” The interior of Dunkin is bare, leaving little to no areas for customers to enjoy their food and beverages. Dunkin is simply just a grab and go place. As Ruby Doggett, an 11th grade student puts it, “I don’t want to be in a Dunkin too long.” Unlike Dunkin, Starbucks prides itself on creating an experience that keeps customers coming back. Recently, Starbucks announced its plans to continue to redesign the interior of its stores to make “customers feel warm, comfortable and cared for.” They aim to redesign around 1,000 stores in the U.S. by the end of 2026. Unfortunately, Dunkin has not released any plans to improve the interior of their stores.
Besides the atmosphere, Starbucks also prioritizes what goes into its customers’ bodies. While Starbucks might not be the healthiest option, it is healthier than Dunkin. On average, Starbucks has less sugar, fewer calories, and more protein than Dunkin products. One may argue that Dunkin has done the same. However, they have yet to provide as many diverse options. Starbucks prioritizes quality and development of its food and drink options, stating, “customers deserve choices that support their lifestyles”. For comparison at Starbucks a sausage, egg, and cheese on an English muffin at Starbucks has a total of 480 calories, 29 grams of fat, and 34 grams of carbohydrates, which is 80 fewer calories, six grams less fat, and six grams less carbohydrates than Dunkin’s sausage, egg, and cheese. As the company expands, it continues to follow its mission of “inspiring and nurturing the human spirit” through its food. They’ve added vegan, lactose-free, vegetarian, and protein options to their menu over the past years. New products such as protein foam, alternative milks, spicy falafel wrap, and veggie wraps allow the company to reach a wide range of people.
Starbucks is the leading example of what a successful coffeehouse looks like, and Dunkin recognizes this as it continues to copy Starbucks. There have been multiple instances where Dunkin has been caught copying Starbucks months later. After Starbucks announced that it would be getting rid of the additional charge for alternative milk, a few months later, Dunkin announced it was going to do the same. Additionally, when Starbucks’ refreshers became more popular, Dunkin added refreshers with similar flavors and lemonade/coconut milk variations. Food and drinks aren’t the only things Dunkin has copied, though. Starbucks introduced mobile order and pay in early 2015, and Dunkin followed suit and added it to their app in 2015. While some might say Dunkin has lower prices, Starbucks’s prices reflect their quality.
Starbucks isn’t just a basic coffeehouse; it offers a better customer experience with welcoming baristas, a variety of food options, and comfortable seating arrangements. These components of the store add up to a more personable feeling for the customer. Although Dunkin may compete in other ways, Starbucks offers a better experience that makes you want to come back.
The Superiority of Dunkin BY Bailey Spivey
In the morning, I tend to run late, meaning if I’m hungry or thirsty, I need something quick and easy. Dunkin provides quality products and fast service, making it the perfect option for a quick breakfast.
Dunkin’s regularity with lower prices shows its budget-friendly system, while they still are able to serve good drinks. Dunkin is known for their low-priced options, which are 10-25% less than Starbucks. According to an article from Expert Beacon, “Looking across both chains, industry data provider Square tells us Starbucks pulls in an average of $32 per customer transaction compared to $24 for your typical visit to Dunkin’.” While both Dunkin and Starbucks offer low-calorie options, Dunkin’s affordability makes it a much better choice.
Dunkin’s consistency with fast service is very convenient for customers. Dunkin’s in-store service is very quick compared to Starbucks, and their drive-thrus take 2.90 minutes, while Starbucks takes 4.44 minutes. In an article from Business Insider, “Dunkin’ has some of the fastest drive-thru times in the industry, coming in second place in 2016 and 2018, and winning the category in 2019.” This demonstrates how Dunkin prioritizes efficiency with their customers, valuing their time. The brand focuses on speed and simplicity, outperforming Starbucks with its quickness.
Dunkin has a widespread variety of locations, from gas stations and highways, almost everywhere. There are a total of 9,948 locations, including 45 states and territories, and found in 3,391 cities. According to an article, “Dunkin’ has opened upwards of 230 stores so far in 2025, per its franchise disclosure document, at a moment when rivals like Starbucks report store closures.” This shows Dunkin’s growth, while Starbucks is closing stores. Though they both have a widespread range of locations, Dunkin’s stores are in more convenient and easy places.
Dunkin’s fast service, lower prices, and variety of locations make it the better choice. Their efficiency, growth, and values are what really make Dunkin stand out. For people who are in a rush and seeking something reliable and quick, Dunkin fits the checklist.

Starbucks vs Dunkin…hmmmm. For me, neither chain is “healthy,” but Starbucks offers slightly better nutritional information on average, while Dunkin’ excels at basic coffee/donuts but can be a sugar trap. Of course, we have to be mindful of either option, oh, and I just love the energy at my favorite locations, you don’t get that at Dunnkin!
