This year, for Social Justice Week, I was in the Women’s Empowerment track. Throughout the week, we listened to six speakers and went on three field trips. On Tuesday, we heard from Sheena Howard, a producer, writer, and professor, who talked about her life journey, work ethic, and overcoming obstacles as a woman of color. That afternoon, a representative named Leslie from the organization Days For Girls visited our track and helped us make reusable pads. Days For Girls is an organization that distributes pads and other period products to girls in countries that don’t have access to period products. On Wednesday, Lyneshia Dukes, the CEO of a coffee company named Dukes’ Brew & Co., spoke about her experiences with expanding her small business with social media and what it’s like to have a small business in Philly. That afternoon, we went to the restaurant Bridget Foys for lunch and heard Bridget talk about owning a restaurant and overcoming challenges, including a fire that burned down her restaurant. On Thursday, we went to the zoo to ask questions to Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman, the CEO of the zoo, and then walked around the primate exhibit. That afternoon, we did an activity within our track group and talked about feminism in the world, within our own communities, and in our school. At the end of the week, Norman came in to talk about self-defense in the morning, and in the afternoon, Tammy spoke with us about owning her own bakery business as we decorated cupcakes. This year during Social Justice, I learned how to be a confident leader in a world dominated by male leaders, how to be successful in things I’m passionate about, and to never underestimate myself.
