Football fans gathered outside Angelo’s Pizzeria at 736 S. 9th Street on Sunday during NFL Wild Card Weekend, representing the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, and Pittsburgh Steelers as they prepared to watch the Sunday slate of playoff games. The fans filled the sidewalks at 9th and Fitzwater and crowded inside the shop, discussing the upcoming game and how it could be the end of the season. The photos show customers waiting both outside in winter gear, staff working in the cramped kitchen, and fans eating their food on the sidewalk. Angelo’s Pizzeria, which opened in 2013, has become a part of many fans’ pre-game traditions and is a community favorite for its cheesesteaks and pizza. We interviewed some patrons on why Angelos was their go-to spot before games, and this is what they had to say. “We’ve been going to Angelos since they reopened after the pandemic, and Eagles games for us just aren’t the same without it.”
In Line at Angelo’s
A crowd of Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, and Pittsburgh Steelers fans wait on the sidewalk at 9th & Fitzwater in South Philly during NFL Wild Card Weekend, with a customer walking with his picked-up food to undoubtedly watch his favorite team play. The line stretches the block on Sundays, turning the sidewalk into a shared pregame tradition. “I came here from San Francisco for the game, and I was told I had to come to Angelos beforehand,” said a 49ers fan while waiting for his food.
